Training course on decision making about forests and other resources

Rapid economic and public sector reforms across Asia and the Pacific have made stakeholders at the subnational and local levels increasingly responsible for delivering positive economic results while sustainably using resources. Because this change affects stakeholders' roles and powers, it requires renewed attention to monitoring accountability and transparency to ensure equitable decisions for fair benefits.

 

There is a real need for those who are involved in making and implementing decisions that affect natural resources and natural resource users to understand the basic concepts and principles of governance and to be able to apply them in their daily work.

 

Aims and Objectives

This practical training course allows leaders at the local, national, and regional levels to apply their understanding of natural resource governance to maximize effectiveness in their day-to-day work.



This course will enable you to:

  • Understand the origins and varying elements of governance and why they are important
  • Build your skills in identifying the components and core principles of governance in various contexts
  • Reflect on current governance issues and how to address them
  • Practice using innovative tools to analyze governance in different contexts
     

Who Should Attend?

Mid-level or upper-level government officials and leaders of civil society groups and private sector companies, at both the national and local levels, who are responsible for making or implementing decisions that affect natural resources and natural resource users
 

Course Contents

  • Individual experience on natural resource governance: Pre-course assignment based on experience and issues you have encountered in your work
  • Basic concepts of governance and its implications: Laws, rules, institutions, and processes alongside ideas of accountability, transparency, participation, and rule of law
  • Governance in practice and ways to improve: Existing frameworks and the challenges and opportunities they present
