RECOFTC in Indonesia

RECOFTC in Indonesia

Following the completion of successful multiple phases of a capacity building for village forest (Hutan Desa) project, RECOFTC is poised to lead the expansion of this community forestry modality with local partners in line with the Government’s ambitious targets for village forestry and for developing Forest Management Units. Despite the ambitious target of national government to expand community forest, lack of resources and capacity at district level as the locus of decentralization are identified. Long line processes in granting rights of community forests are also slowing the progress of the national program development. The capacity building needs assessment conducted by RECOFTC with stakeholders recognized the ongoing need in Indonesia for capacity building, generating and communicating knowledge, bringing 64 community forestry perspectives into policy debates, and integrating the devolution of forest management in Indonesia’s national forest program.

As Indonesia grapples with reducing deforestation and forest degradation through REDD+ initiatives, RECOFTC has been and will continue supporting the capacity development of grassroots stakeholders to empower their more effective engagement in REDD+ development. The capacity development would focus more on sustainable forest based enterprise development as part of the climate change mitigation and adaptation for enhancement of communities’ livelihoods and resilience.
