Asia-Pacific Forestry Week 2016

The largest forestry gathering in the Asia-Pacific region invites practitioners to join Asia-Pacific Forestry Week (APFW) 2016 in the Philippines. The call for events for 'Serving society: forestry and people' (Stream 3) is now open.

APFW 2016 aims to highlight the important roles forestry can play in the wider sustainable development scheme. The event will be held in Clark Freeport Zone, the Philippines, from 22 to 26 February 2016. In addition to policy-level plenary sessions, the event will have five main thematic areas, or streams, that are led by FAO's key partner organizations. Each stream will focus on topics ranging from trade and market; climate change; community forestry; governance; and green investment.

APFW 2016 - Serving society: forestry and people (Stream 3)

RECOFTC - The Center for People and Forests and the ASEAN Social Forestry Network (ASFN) will together lead Stream 3, entitled “Serving society: forestry and people.” With the overall theme focusing on people-centered forestry for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the stream aims to:

  • Develop understanding for the opportunities that forests can provide for achieving the SDGs;
  • Recognize and empower roles of key forestry stakeholders—smallholders, Indigenous Peoples and Community Forestry members—as major investors and forest landscape custodians for achieving the SDGs;
  • Determine support from ‘forest investors’ (government, the private sector, development banks) and encourage innovative thinking with actions to prioritize investing in people-centered forestry in Asia  and the Pacific, and thus support achieving the SDGs;
  • Raise awareness of the ASEAN Agenda and how this complements the work on the Asia-Pacific level in addressing issues of mutual concern, such as food security, forest conservation, community economy and livelihoods, as well as climate change mitigation and adaptation; and
  • Develop key commitments and action points that key forestry stakeholders can deliver over the coming years in supporting SDGs under their respective roles and contexts.
