Yangon, Myanmar – On 11-13 August 2014, RECOFTC – The Center for People and Forests held a gender training to strengthen the capacities of key staff in the Myanmar Forest Department and CSOs working on forestry and REDD+ related initiatives in Myanmar. Twenty-two participants representing 10 different CSOs attended the training.
After an introduction on gender mainstreaming, the participants discussed its importance in forestry and REDD+ initiatives. The discussions included participants’ views on the roles of women and men in forestry and REDD+, and how related initiatives in these sectors affect the two groups differently.
Participants then explored various gender-sensitive approaches and ways to promote the principles of equity and inclusion.
An expert panel discussion was led by Salai Isac Khin, Executive Director of Gender and Development Initiative (GDI); Naw Ei Ei Min, Director of Promotion of Indigenous and Nature Together (POINT), as well as three officials of the government of Myanmar’s Forest Research Initiative.
“This training program was very useful for me,” said Mr. Sein Dale, Field Manager of Wildlife Conservation Society. “In the Sagain region of northern Myanmar, deforestation is a major issue, and everyone needs to understand the role of forests in climate change as well as the importance of effective participation of both men and women in sustainably managing forests.”
