Achievements

Achievements

Since 2009, the Grassroots project has made a significant progress and achieved a number of milestones with high degree of success and quality. The project’s achievements are presented below against each output.

Output 1: A set of training package on REDD+ for Grassroots stakeholders is developed

The project has developed a range of training and awareness raising material on climate change and REDD+ for grassroots stakeholders. These include training manuals, guidebooks, questions and answers booklets, leaflets, climate change and REDD+ posters, radio series, and videos. The REDD+ training materials and products are developed based on a Capacity Development Needs Assessment (CDNA) for climate change and REDD+ conducted in each of the five project countries.

All the training and awareness raising material are brought out in English and national languages of the project countries. Please visit this link for more details on the project’s publications.

Output 2: Organizing the Training of Trainers Programs for partner organizations and other key stakeholders

Following a cascading approach, the Grassroots Project rolled out a number of Training of Trainers (ToT) programs for partner organizations and other key stakeholders at national and sub-national level on climate change and REDD+, and associated topics such as REDD+ safeguards including Free, Prior and Informed Consent in REDD+, Gender in REDD+ and REDD+ in the context of sustainable forest management. The objective of such an approach was to create a cadre of in-country trainers, who can take forward the REDD+ capacity development agenda, and thus sustain the initiative beyond the project period. Using such an approach, the project has so far trained 2,300 national and sub-national level facilitators and trainers, which include 36% of women participants.

Output 3: Grassroots Capacity Development Programs

At the grassroots level (district, commune and village), the project organized a large number of training and awareness-raising events, ranging from one-day to three-days. The aim of these programs is to build a greater understanding of grassroots stakeholders on the concept of climate change and REDD+ and associated social safeguards in the context of sustainable forest management and role of local communities in implementing REDD+ and associated key challenges.

The project has used a variety of local tools to raise awareness among the grassroots stakeholders. These include puppet shows, radio talk shows, street plays, songs etc. In addition the project has also roped in religious leaders and preachers in certain context to communicate the message about climate change and REDD+.

In all five countries, the project has thus far reached to more than 31,000 grassroots stakeholders for raising their awareness on climate change and REDD+, including 40% women with Nepal leading the outreach through a nation wide network of FECOFUN and HIMAWANTI – two key partners of the project.

Output 4: Bringing up Grassroots Stakeholdersconcerns and issues to REDD+ policy makers and other stakeholders

In Phase III, one of the key focuses of the project is to document the issues and concerns of grassroots stakeholders and cascade them up to sub-national, national and international level through various communication channels. In the first year of the project phase III, grassroots consultations were organised in Nepal, while in other four countries such consultations will be conducted in the second and third year of the project phase III. Below is a brief overview of progress on this output.

So far such consultations events have been conducted in Nepal, on following key topics:

  • Drivers of deforestation and forest degradation at local level
  • Role of district level stakeholders in REDD+ and climate change
  • Sustainable forest management and REDD+
  • Gender and equity in REDD+
  • Role of district level stakeholders securing rights of women in REDD+ and climate Change
  • Social safeguards in REDD+
  • Role of district level stakeholders in REDD+ and climate change

All such consultations in Nepal were facilitated by REDD+ trainers and facilitators, who had participated in REDD+ ToT program, sub-national trainings, and refresher programs under the grassroots project.

Output 5: Disseminating Project Lessons and Experiences

The Grassroots project teams at regional and national level undertook a number of initiatives to share project’s results and experience within and beyond target countries, and thus contributed to ongoing REDD+ discourse at various levels.

Every year, the Grassroots project organizes annual reflection workshops, both at regional and national levels, as one of the important medium to disseminate project’s learning and experiences widely. These reflection workshops are attended by the project partner organizations, national project coordinators, representatives of national REDD+ agencies, and other key stakeholders. At national level, besides sharing the progress of the project and sharing lessons learned, such reflection workshop are also used to draft action plan for the following year.
