This policy brief discusses the importance of empowering grassroots communities in forest management and implementation of climate change mitigation activities in Indonesia. Although there are forest management modalities in place, by not involving local communities in the planning and implementation process progress can be slow while impacts of climate change continue to affect the forests and communities. This brief calls for regulations on climate change mitigation and adaption to be sensitive to current ecosystem conditions and to ensure the policies  protect the rights of local communities. At the same time local people must be involved in the management of forests located in the conservation areas. Furthermore, in order to achieve the targeted community forestry goal set by the government, enabling policies should be in place to facilitate implementation on the ground. Government should also consider REDD+ as a mechanism to improve local forest management in a sustainable way.

This policy brief was compiled from a series of grassroots consultations with stakeholders as part of RECOFTC’s Grassroots Capacity Building for REDD+ in Asia project activities in Indonesia. The brief is in Bahasa Indonesia and was developed as a collaboration between RECOFTC and FKKM.
