Khoun Mon of Prey Kbal Bey Community Forest Wins Award, RECOFTC assists

Khoun Mon, who is the community forestry leader of Prey Kbal Bey in Cambodia, wins first place at the annual Farmer Conference

RECOFTC - Cambodia Country Program has a long history of working with the Prey Kbal Bey community forest located in Cambodia's Kampong Thom Province, with the most recent efforts focused on piloting a participatory monitoring and evaluation system with community members.

As part of these initiatives, RECOFTC is committed to strengthening the membership's voice, externally and internally. These efforts materialized when Khoun Mon, the leader of Prey Kbal Bey community forest, utilized his voice and won the annual Farmers Conference in Phnomn Penh. Hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the event is symbolic of recent trends in Cambodia's concept of natural resource management:

"The annual conference represents the Cambodian government's recent interest in hearing localized perspectives on agriculture, fishery and forest related issues," writes Dy Vutheara, Cambodia's Communication Officer, in a longer feature piece about the award and community forestry in Cambodia.

Speaking about the reality of what it is like to work on Cambodia's forest management goals, Mr. Mon was awarded a hand tractor, USD$ 500, and a certificate before heading home to his community.
