Enhancing forestry curriculum in South Sulawesi

South Sulawesi, Indonesia – This week 16 participants from universities in South Sulawesi took part in a workshop focused on enhancing university forestry curriculums. The aim of the workshop was to test whether RECOFTCs market analysis and development (MA&D) and livelihood enhancement approaches could be integrated into university curriculums.

Martin Greijmans, RECOFTC, said that, ‘university forestry curriculum need to respond to ongoing changes in the forestry sector – such as increased private sector investment, land grabbing, and conflict – to better equip the next generation of foresters with the skills and knowledge required to deal with these issues’.

Participants reflected on the subject development agenda and materials of their curriculums and considered how they could be improved. Participants were presented with new course material and asked to test the material by teaching it to each other.

The workshop is part of a series of events focused on how university forestry curriculums can be improved by incorporating livelihood enhancement and MA&D approaches into their design, and falls under RECOFTC’s ASEAN-Swiss Partnership on Social Forestry and Climate Change (ASFCC) project. Follow-up workshops in September, October and November will test the new course material on students, and adapt and finalize the training agenda.

Additionally, the workshop aims to harvest current experiences of academics and training agencies, which will be shared at up-coming regional events in September 2017 and March 2018.
