Organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Government of Australia, the 30th session of the Asia-Pacific Forestry Commission (APFC) brings together member nations and associate members of FAO from the Asia-Pacific region.

At the APFC's 30th session, RECOFTC is:

  • attending the main congress and sessions
  • showcasing our work at the marketplace on Dialogue Day
  • bringing valuable insights as panelists
  • contributing to two side events

To amplify our impact and contribute significantly to the discussions on forestry and related issues within the Asia-Pacific region, RECOFTC is represented by Dr. Chandra Shekhar Silori, Deputy Executive Director. He is joined by Marina Tornorsam, Regional Project Coordinator for Community-Based Forest Management (CBFiM), and Tran Van Chau, Community Forestry Partnership Coordinator in Viet Nam.

Side event: Mobilizing and strengthening efforts for the conservation and sustainable use of tropical primary forests across Asia

Date and time: 2 October 2023, 10:3012:00 AEST | Venue: King Room No. 4

This side event will focus on “Making It Work: Natural Regeneration and Community Engagement for Sustainable Restoration”. It is jointly organized by the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI), Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation (APFNet), Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), International Society of Tropical Foresters (ISTF) and Korea Forest Service (KFS) - National Institute of Forest Science of the Republic of Korea (NIFoS).

Dr. Silori will share insights and best practices for conserving primary forests in Asia, provide information on the Indo-Malaya Critical Forest Biome Integrated Programme, explore key elements of a regional agenda for primary forest conservation and outline future actions.

Side event: Integrated Fire Management for the Asia Pacific

Date and time: 6 October 2023, 08:00–09:30 AEST | Venue: Maritime Ballroom

This side event organized by RECOFTC in collaboration with FAO and AFOCO, will highlight integrated fire management initiatives from the Asia-Pacific region. It will feature specific country examples from ongoing projects, highlighting these as models of good practice within the region.

Ms. Tornorsam will present our Community-based Fire Management (CBFiM) project, being implemented in landscapes in Cambodia, Lao PDR, Thailand and Viet Nam.

32nd Montreal Process Working Group 

Date and time: 6 October 2023, 14:10–14:30 | Venue: Maritime Ballroom

Following the APFC event, the Government of Australia will host the upcoming meeting of the Montreal Process Working Group. This working group consists of 12 nations, collectively responsible for 90% of the world's temperate and boreal forests. Their primary focus is on monitoring and evaluating forest trends and conditions, making them pivotal leaders in this critical field.

Dr. Silori will present on the Community Forestry Participatory Assessment Tool and its use of criteria and indicators.
