Managing south-east Asia’s savannas: challenges and holistic approaches through community-based fire management
Savannas, widespread globally, are highly flammable ecosystems contributing to 90 per cent of annual burned areas and emissions. Asian savannas, often misclassified as 'poor forests', face fire regime challenges, particularly in the Lower Mekong's dry dipterocarp forests. This paper highlights the need for improved understanding, community-based fire management, integrated planning and incentives to address transboundary haze and climate mitigation in these ecosystems.
