RECOFTC and the Lao PDR Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare are hosting a workshop on gender roles and occupational safety and health in the wood processing industry in the country.

Workers and employers from companies and factories in the formal and informal wood processing sectors in Xayaboury Province will attend. RECOFTC will give participants a new handbook on occupational safety and health in wood processing in Lao PDR.

The workshop will cover these topics:

  • How to prevent hazards when handling, installing and upgrading machinery
  • How to mitigate occupational safety and health risks related to wood processing that workers and employers face on the job
  • How to disseminate information on occupational safety and health and gender equality
  • Labour laws and decrees regulating the wood processing industry in Lao.

The workshop supports the implementation of the Prime Minister of Lao Order No. 15, which aims to stop illegal logging and trading. Also, participants will learn about exporting sustainably managed, legal timber to markets such as the European Union (EU) through the EU’s Forest Law Enforcement, Government and Trade (FLEGT) Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA).

This workshop also supports the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Lao PDR to achieve the targets it set in the “Vision of Equality and Gender in Forestry 2030 and Community Development in 2016-2025.”

Participation at the workshop is by invitation only.

The workshop is organized under RECOFTC’s three-year Weaving Leadership for Gender Equality initiative, known as WAVES. With funding from Sweden, the regional initiative cultivates gender champions in Lao  and six other countries to influence gender equality in climate change, REDD+ and forestry, law enforcement, governance and trade policies and processes. The workshop is also supported by the EU-funded project Voices for Mekong Forests, the Lao Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, and RECOFTC’s FLOURISH project, a three-year initiative funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
