Training workshop: Communication for impact
RECOFTC, in partnership with the Center for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF), is organizing a training workshop on communication for impact, specifically designed for researchers involved in forest landscape governance across Southeast Asia. This workshop is a component of the capacity-building initiatives offered by the Explore program, aimed at enhancing the communication skills of researchers engaged in Explore-supported research projects.
The four-day regional training workshop will provide participants with advanced skills and strategies for effective research communication. It will explore various aspects such as understanding the target audience, refining communication messages and choosing the most effective tools and channels for dissemination. The workshop includes sessions on the key principles of effective communication, practical advice on what to do and what to avoid and guidance on selecting the right channels for reaching specific audience groups. A panel discussion featuring CIFOR-ICRAF experts will showcase successful examples of effective research communication, offering participants valuable insights. Participants will also have the opportunity to develop and refine their communication strategies, receive feedback from experts and discuss plans for their implementation.
Resource persons from RECOFTC, CIFOR-ICRAF and other relevant regional experts will conduct the training virtually. Experts from RECOFTC’s country teams will provide in-person training in Explore focus countries – Cambodia, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Viet Nam – during the second and third quarters of 2024. These in-person training will be supported by RECOFTC Main Office, CIFOR-ICRAF and the Forest Foundation Philippines (FFP).
Objectives
- Describe the key principles of communicating research findings with greater impact
- Acquire skills to analyze target audiences and understand their communication needs
- Understand various approaches and tools for effectively engaging target audiences and conveying impactful messages
- Review and refine the team’s communication strategy and develop an action plan for its implementation
Expected participants
- Representatives from the seven regional research teams who were awarded Explore implementation grants.
- Trainers and lecturers from RECOFTC, CIFOR-ICRAF and FFP as well as strategic universities in the region, who will subsequently provide similar training at the national level.
Expected outcomes
Upon completing the training, participants should be able to:
- Refine communication strategies and develop actionable plans for their research projects.
- Effectively communicate research findings to a variety of audiences, thereby ensuring greater impact and relevance in their respective fields.
- Enhance their skills in communicating research.
