Consultation workshop on Cambodia’s 2021-2025 gender mainstreaming strategic plan for the environmental sector

RECOFTC and Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment are hosting a consultation workshop on the 2021-2025 gender mainstreaming strategic plan for the environmental sector. 

Participants will include representatives from Cambodia’s Ministry of Environment, the Department of Environment under the Ministry and members of community protected area networks in Cambodia. In addition, joining the consultation are three representatives from the newly formed Community Protected Area Women Network, an all-women group established with RECOFTC support in 2019 under the Voices for Mekong Forests project. 

Participants will discuss and exchange information to advance understanding of the needs of communities that manage protected areas. Together, Ministry representatives and community members will review the results and opportunities emerging from activities implemented as part of the current strategic plan. The feedback from the consultation will shape the gender mainstreaming strategy in the environmental sector for the next five-year period, from 2021 to 2025.

The Ministry of Environment in Cambodia governs natural protected areas. As part of its mandate, the Ministry develops community zones within protected areas to create livelihood opportunities for people living near and in the areas to ensure sustainable management of the natural resources. RECOFTC has supported the Gender Working Group within the Ministry since 2008 when it assessed the capacity-building needs of the Ministry to achieve gender equality. Based on the results, the Ministry developed its first Gender Mainstreaming Strategic Plan in the environmental sector for 2010 to 2012. RECOFTC and the Ministry have continued to advance gender equality in Cambodia’s environmental sector since 2019 under RECOFTC’s three-year Weaving Leadership for Gender Equality initiative, known as WAVES. With funding from Sweden, the regional initiative cultivates gender champions in Cambodia and six other countries to influence gender equality in climate change, REDD+ and forestry, law enforcement, governance and trade policies and processes.
