Organized by RECOFTC through the Community-based Fire Management (CBFiM) project, this consultation workshop will seek to evaluate existing technologies and identify the needs and capacities of communities and stakeholders for forest fire management tailored to local conditions. 

Background

Supported by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service and partners, this cross-landscape project advocates for people-centered land management on fire practices and wildfires. The project is conducting gap analyses on fire management tools, systems and capacities. Its research outcomes contribute to improved forest management, policies and practices. 

In Viet Nam, the CBFiM Project is being implemented in four villages in Da Quyn commune, Duc Trong district, Lam Dong province. In collaboration with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Lam Dong province, we will organize two consultations at the community and provincial levels on appropriate technologies to support CBFiM. 

Objectives

Assess existing technologies and determine the needs and capacity of communities and stakeholders for forest fire management tailored to local contexts
Engage provincial-level stakeholders in discussions on forest fire prevention and fighting
Discuss forest fire prevention and fighting needs and capacities at both provincial and community levels. 

Expected participants

  • Household representatives from four villages – Ma Bo, Cho Rung, Tan Ha and Toa Cat – of Da Quyn commune
  • Representatives of local government and relevant units in Duc Trong district and Da Quyn commune
  • Forest fire experts from Vietnam Forestry University
  • RECOFTC staff

Expected outcomes

  • Better understanding of the capacity and technology needs at the community and provincial levels
    Agreement on data utilization and integration within the province's existing forest fire management system
  • Establishment of a framework that can be scaled up to other districts and forest management units across Lam Dong province
